Monthly server maintenance
Backups. Verify backups actually restored — not just that they “completed.” A backup that silently fails is no backup at all.
Updates & patches. Apply operating system and firmware updates. This is your first defense against most attacks and bugs.
Drive health. Check SMART status on every drive. Failing drives give warning signs weeks in advance — if you look.
Logs. Skim system logs for errors and failed jobs before they become outages.
Cooling & dust. Check fans, temperatures, and airflow. Overheating kills drives and power supplies.
Quarterly server maintenance
Full restore test. Restore a backup to a test machine and confirm your data comes back intact.
Firmware updates. Update RAID controller, BIOS/UEFI, and drive firmware.
Security review. Review user accounts, remove stale access, and confirm the firewall rules still make sense.
UPS test. If your server is on a battery backup, test that it actually holds a charge and shuts the server down cleanly.
Capacity check. Is the storage or memory nearly full? Plan the upgrade now, not during the outage.
