Why is my Wi-Fi slow? 7 real causes (and how to fix them)

Slow Wi-Fi is almost never “the internet being slow” — it’s a problem with your router, its placement, or the devices around it. Here are the 7 most common causes we fix at homes across the 417 area, and what to do about each.
1. Your router is in the wrong place
Routers hate corners, floors, and metal. If your router is tucked behind the TV or in a closet, the signal dies before it reaches the rest of the house. Fix: move it to a central, elevated spot.
2. Too many devices fighting for airtime
Every phone, TV, camera, and smart speaker shares your Wi-Fi. In a busy home, that adds up fast. Fix: prioritize important devices in the router settings, or move to a mesh system.
3. Your router is old
Wi-Fi standards move fast. A router older than about five years is often the bottleneck — no matter what speed you pay for. Fix: upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6 router (we can set it up for you).
4. Neighbor interference
If you live in an apartment or a crowded neighborhood, your neighbors’ Wi-Fi uses the same frequencies and can interfere with yours. Fix: switch to a less congested channel or the 5 GHz / 6 GHz band.
5. You’re on the wrong band
Most routers broadcast 2.4 GHz (good range, slower) and 5 GHz (faster, shorter range). If every device joined the 2.4 GHz network, everything feels slow. Fix: connect nearby devices to 5 GHz.
6. ISP throttling or a weak plan
Sometimes it really is the internet service. Run a speed test on a wired connection — if it’s slow there too, it’s your provider, not your Wi-Fi. Fix: talk to your ISP about your plan.
7. A device is hogging the network
One device downloading large files or running constant updates can choke everyone else. Fix: check router settings for bandwidth hogs.
